Firearm History: The Glock 19

Introduced in 1988, the Glock 19 was developed as a more compact version of the original Glock 17. It retained the same 9mm chambering and basic operating system but used a shorter barrel, slide, and grip, along with a standard 15-round magazine.

That combination helped the Glock 19 establish a category of its own. It was small enough for concealed carry and backup use, yet large enough to function as a primary service pistol. Over time, it became widely used by law-enforcement agencies, military units, security professionals, and civilian shooters around the world.

The Glock 19 has continued to evolve through multiple generations.
